Oakbay Investments was formed in 2006 with the objective of becoming a diversified investment company with interests in ICT, exploration and mining. It has since expanded to include investments in real estate and leisure. The group now employs over 8000 people across South Africa.
In ICT, Oakbay subsidiary Sahara Computers Holdings operates Sahara Computers, which is one of the largest independent distributors of ICT products in South Africa. An empowerment company with over 6 000 channel partners, Sahara Computers supports the needs of end users that include corporations, SMEs, government departments, educational institutions and individuals. It is a single point of purchase for resellers, providing both hardware and peripherals, as well as televisions, cameras and security equipment. Sahara Computers is also an authorised distributor for Genius, HP, Lexmark, LG, Sony and Toshiba.
In exploration, mining and commodities, Oakbay is a majority shareholder in several companies and participates in a number of joint ventures. One of the mining investments include Shiva Uranium (Pty) Ltd, which holds mining rights to over 14000 hectares of land and is currently operating three gold and uranium shafts in the Klerksdorp area. Oakbay is also a 60% shareholder in JIC Mining Services. Oakbay also has smaller shareholdings in such companies as Thembekile Mining, Kebrastyle, Extriforce and Leswene mining.
In real estate and leisure, the company has a stake in Clifftop Lodge in Welgevonden, a national conservation area in Limpopo.
Oakbay's long-term goal is to be a key private equity funder in various industries, adopting a partnership approach and facilitating genuine and meaningful empowerment.
